Summary This painting shows Sigismund, then King of Hungary and Croatia. Sigismund was one of the leaders and participants of the Battle of Nicopolis and is known to have fled the battle to safety when it became clear that the European army was being massacred after trying to sway the other leaders to another military strategy and failing. Sigismund would later go on to be Holy Roman Emperor.
