"In this third edition the general purpose of the preceding editions has been adhered to--that of presenting an impartial statement of the more important facts of the science. There must be selection both in points of view and in the facts that are given. The field has grown too large to be covered in a year, if all details are to be incorporated. Selection must be made of the facts that have the most general bearing and of the points of view that can be most readily organized into a consistent system; a sane and not too colorless eclecticism has been striven for. It is probably a favorable time to give an impartial view, for most of the very rigid systems seem to be undergoing change or losing their appeal. Emphasis has been placed upon the points in the different interpretations that are common to most schools. In the arrangement of material the plan of treating the nervous processes rather fully first has been retained. I have found that these facts are needed in discussing the more psychological principles, and that it is best to state them before they are to be used, rather than to refer ahead to the facts as stated in later chapters. I have begun the discussion of the more strictly psychological processes with the individual differences for they again are to be used later. Then the motor and affective activities have been considered. These constitute a consistent whole. In treating the intellectual or cognitive processes, I have retained the plan of considering first the more fundamental activities that are common to all of the more concrete processes, and then passing on to the different concrete activities. The three fundamental processes are the recall of older experiences, the general facts of the selection of sensory stimuli, and meaning and generalization.
