Summary Featuring detailed illustrations, The Art of Ballet teaches readers about the history of ballet in Italy. While most think of Russia when they think of ballet, Italy has a long history with the art. It is actually believed that the earliest predecessor of classical ballet was practiced in the courts of Italy during the Renaissance before the performances became popular in France. This ballet was very different from the dancing we see today. Tutus, ballet slippers and dancing en pointe was not yet popular. Instead, the dance steps were altered from those practiced in traditional ballroom settings.
