Summary |
Modeled after a similar organization in Britain, the Woman's Land Army of America (WLAA) was founded in 1917 when the United States joined WWI; it formed again during WWII as part of The United States Crop Corps. During WWI, nearly 20,000 women joined the WLAA. Many of them were higher-educated, and units were often associated with colleges. This poster is for a training school at the University of Virginia. The organization trained urban women,ℓoften referred to as farmerettes,ℓfor agricultural and farm work. |
