A love affair in 1870s San Francisco between a Chinese-American photographer and the wife of his benefactor, a white millionaire. It is told in the present by a crooked art historian attempting to obtain negatives of a nude, the owner unaware of their value. Part crime novel, part portrait of race relations at the time.
