Summary |
Joan Oliva is one of the few known female cartographers from the early modern period. This late 16th-century map shows the coasts of the British Isles, western Europe and the western Mediterranean. The map was drawn with pen and ink on vellum and colored with watercolor paints. It is drawn in the portolan style, a type of early European map intended for sailors that features detailed coasts, a lack of interior features and compass lines. |
