Summary Although many species of whales and dolphins vocalize, male humpback whales in particular are best known for their songs. These calls are referred to asℓ"songs" because they consist of sequences of sounds in repeated patterns. It is thought that male humpbacks sing while in their breeding grounds. Song patternsℓmay vary, or change completely, from year to year, and songs among humpbacks with no overlapping territory are never alike. Other humpback vocalizations may be made while feeding, though these are distinct from songs.ℓThis recording was made in the waters of theℓHumpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary in the Hawaiian Islands.
