Summary This painting depicts a Native American woman being pledged in marriage to a European fur trapper. In the early days of fur trapping in the Canadian northwest, many European men, many of whom were Catholic, took Native American and Inuit women as wives; thus, the Métis people, characterized by their mixed heritage and Catholic faith, were born.
