Originally released as a motion picture in 1924. Film restored in 1995 by Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv, Berlin, the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, and the Deutsches Filminstitut, with the cooperation of Jugoslovenska Kinoteka, Belgrad. Video restoration in 2008 by Bret Wood, Kino International Corp.

Summary Charts the mental disintegration of a concert pianist whose hands are amputated after a train crash, and replaced with the hands of an executed murderer. When Orlac's father is murdered by the dead man's hands, Orlac begins a descent toward madness.
