Many Mennonite congregations in the 19th century continued their ancient practice of a cappella singing in four-part harmony. Intended for Mennonite use, this collection includes 457 hymns organized by topic. To aid in singing, the hymn tunes are printed using the Aiken shape note system, a musical notation popular in the 19th century that was designed to facilitate congregational and community singing.
