Summary |
The story of the Alamo continues to maintain its place in the minds of American citizens as one of the pivotal and heroic events in the country’s history. As such, it has inspired the creation of countless works in all forms of art. Today we are very familiar with the history books, novels, poems and movies created about the Alamo. Here on this stage, be sure to take a look at “The Capture of the Alamo,” a dramatic historical play written by Texan horse breeder Hiram H. McLane in 1886 to raise money for the Alamo monument. The story opens with General Santa Anna preparing his attack in Texas. As the play progresses, you are introduced to several of the defenders, with Davy Crockett as the protagonist. While McLane does take some liberties in the story, his depiction of the siege is a unique perspective from the time and a worthwhile read for anyone with an interest in the Alamo. |
