Summary Tompkins Matteson paints an elaborate image of a male witch at trial with many participants and other citizens pointing and gesturing accusingly. Matteson's painting demonstrates, perhaps exaggeratedly, the unfair nature of the Salem Witch Trials in Colonial New England. Through Matteson's work, viewers can also see the nature of the 17th-century American courtroom. Courtrooms were small, intimate, almost theatrical settings wherein public opinion flowed openly.
