Interviews include community leaders, historians, and deaf Americans with diverse views on language use, technology, and identity. The documentary also takes a straight-forward look at life for people who are part of the cultural-linguistic group who use American Sign Language and often define themselves as "Deaf" with a capital and cultural "D" and deaf people who, for a variety of reasons, do not identify with the Deaf cultural community. The history often shows that intersections between deaf and Deaf people are many and that oppression and discrimination are common experiences. 538 DVD; Region 1; Stereo; widescreen presentation, enhanced for 16x9 televisions. 546 In English with optional descriptive or subtitles in English; closed-captioned in English. 610 20 Gallaudet University|xStrike, 1988. 610 20 Gallaudet University|xPresidents. 650 0 Deafness. 650 0 Deafness in children. 650 0 Deaf|xEducation|zUnited States. 650 0 Deaf|zUnited States|xSocial conditions. 650 0 Deaf|xMeans of communication|zUnited States. 650 0 Deaf|zUnited States|xHistory. 650 0 Sign language. 650 0 Sign language|xHistory. 650 0 American Sign Language|xHistory. 650 0 Hearing impaired. 650 0 Hearing aids. 650 0 Cochlear implants. 650 0 Deaf|xCivil rights|zWashington (D.C.) 655 7 Documentary films.|2lcgft 655 7 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.|2lcgft 655 7 Video recordings for people with visual disabilities. |2lcgft 700 1 Hott, Lawrence R. 700 1 Garey, Diane. 700 1 Chowder, Ken. 700 1 Channing, Stockard. 700 1 Gannon, Jack R. 700 1 Caplan, Kimby. 700 1 Betts, Wayne Jr. 700 1 Taylor, Chad W. 700 1 Luhn, Arthur. 700 1 Mangiardi, Adrean. 700 1 Salaway, Tracey. 700 1 Visco, Rene. 710 2 WETA-TV (Television station : Washington, D.C.) 710 2 Florentine Films. 710 2 Hott Productions. 710 2 Gallaudet University. 710 2 PBS Home Video. 994 02|bWHP
