Summary Considered the first documentation of recreational canoeing, this illustrated work was written by an avid sportsman who gave up shooting for canoeing when an accident left him unable to hold a rifle steady.ℓMacGregor designed his own canoes, modeled after Indian methods, that could be paddled with a double-bladed paddle or operated by sails.ℓExplaining why he chose canoeing, MacGregor wrote, “in walking you are bounded by every sea and river, and in a common sailing-boat you are bounded by every shallow and shore; whereas, ...a canoe [can] be paddled or sailed, or hauled, or carried over land or water.”
