Summary |
"This small book is the outgrowth of a one-semester course given at the University of Wisconsin to classes of junior and senior students gathered from all colleges of the university. It is not easy to design a course that will at the same time please undergraduates in physics, chemistry, statistics, agriculture, engineering, and pure mathematics. This book is quite conservative in following the outlines of a standard course in the theory of equations but differs from it in the emphasis it places upon the theory of polynomials, a point of view that should be of particular value to students who expect to continue with mathematics. The small amount of abstract algebra that it contains should be painlessly absorbable even by those to whom it is not a primary interest. The computational aspect of the subject is not neglected. Determinants are not included in this book, for it has been our practice to postpone this topic to a second semester in order to have sufficient time for a really satisfactory course in matrices and determinants"--Preface.
