The Last Days of Pompeii is a novel inspired by a painting of the same name by Karl Bryullov. While it was once very popular, it has largely been passed over by today's critics and educators. The novel uses extended metaphors and cultural iconography to represent the decadent life of Rome and the changes that were coming. The story comes to its cataclysmic conclusion with the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Scholars of English and Italian history alike will find Bulwer-Lytton's Pompeii a worthy read.
