Summary This articleℓdescribes the context in which the British decided to send a military expedition into Tibet in 1903. Though only a short occupation, the British were trying to counter the Russian forces in the area. The British had already conquered Burma, Bhutan and Sikkim, leaving Tibet the only Himalayan kingdom not yet under British influence. It could be said that this British invasion of Tibet, though short-lived, certainly led to an increased interest in the Himalayas as mountaineering challenges, as many European climbers hadℓexhausted the novelty of theℓAlps in the late 1800s.ℓ
