Summary Known as the most candid First Lady in White House history, Elizabeth "Betty" Ford rattled many Americans by talking openly about sensitive subjects like breast cancer, premarital sex, abortion, marijuana and equal pay. Shocking the nation from her admittance to drug use to publicly announcing her private relations with President Ford, Betty was a major force for women's rights and received wild praise and criticism from the American people. Overcoming her addictions to alcohol and prescription drugs, she founded a rehabilitation clinic and charity for those struggling with substance abuse. She is seen here in her official White House portrait.
Added Author Kennerly, David Hume, 1947- photographer.
