Summary An Italian opera in three acts by the famous composer George Frideric Handel, Giulio Cesare was written in 1724 about Caesar's military campaign in Egypt. First performed in London in 1724, the opera was an immediate success and soon opened in Paris, Hamburg and Brunswick. While Caesar is the main character in the opera, Cleopatra plays an engaging part, acting as the seductress to convince Caesar to give her the throne to Egypt. After falling into obscurity in the 19th century with most of Handel's other works, the opera was revived in the 20th century by Oskar Hagen. The play was then performed in English for the first time in 1930. Today, the work is the most popular of Handel's operas, with more than 200 productions in many countries.
