This volume is intended to serve as a graduate-level introductory text for prospective practioners who have some basic familiarity with psychoanalytic theory. In an informal, conversational tone, the authors take a largely classical (i.e., Freudian) approach, covering such topics as basic personality theory; the concepts of resistance, transference, and countertransference; and the theory and strategy of dream interpretation. . . . Thus, we proposed to write a book that would be accessible to the beginning therapist, would deal with the nuts-and-bolts of therapy as well as with the concepts that give a framework for the therapy, and would adhere to what we believe are sound principles: the principles of an autonomous psychotherapy (to use T.
