This painting by Frances Anne Hopkins shows the Red River Expedition of 1877 that set out to confront the River Rebellion led by Louis Riel in western Canada. The expedition was arduous; over 1,000 men travelled over hundreds of miles of wilderness in the middle of summer, carrying heavy canons and other ammunition. |
