Summary |
The Farce of Master Pierre Patelin was written anonymously in 1457. The often humorous theatrical piece is a wonderful example of medieval farce. The play follows the exploits of Master Pierre Patelin, a good-for-nothing lawyer who convinces a shopkeeper to let him buy fine cloth for his wife on credit. When the shopkeeper shows up at Patelin’s house to collect his payment, chaos ensues. Eventually, the shopkeeper takes Patelin to court, and the story once again presents a series of twists and turns. Theatrically, The Farce of Master Pierre Patelin is a relatively simple play. There are only five characters in the entire play, and the it takes place in only three locations: the market, Pierre Patelin’s home and a court room. This brief play can be performed in about an hour. Despite its simplicity, the play was incredibly popular during its day, and it proved influential to many writers, including Rabelais. |
