Summary In this expressionistic Restoration comedy man is depicted in a distorted exaggerated fashion in order to make fun of ambition, nobility, idealism and government. It explores the battle for wealth and fortune as well as the search for security and constancy in courtship. This was a major influence on the theatre of the absurd.
