Summary Although the title states that this is a “dictionary,” this massive five-volume work is better described as an encyclopedia. It deals with the language, literature and contents of both the Old and New Testaments, along with the Apocrypha. Its signed articles are sometimes several pages in length. Particular attention is paid to the archeology, geology and natural history of Biblical lands. The nearly 200 authors who contributed to this work were established Biblical scholars of the day, and were generally Protestant Christians from the United Kingdom and the United States. This work remains an excellent source of Biblical information as understood around 1900.
