Summary This portrait shows Anthony Ashley-Cooper, the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, who was vehemently opposed to the prospect of a Catholic monarch during the later years of Charles II's reign. Cooper's influence helped introduce the Exclusion Bill in 1679 that would aim to disinherit Charles' brother, James, from the throne, due to his Catholicism.
