| Summary |
This painting depicts the Duke of York, James, the brother of Charles II and future King of England, in an allegorical Roman costume. During the Exclusion Crisis of the late 1670s, it was revealed that the Duke of York had converted to Catholicism and should be excluded from the monarchy. James resigned as Lord High Admiral, rather than take the anti-Catholic oath prescribed by the Test Act. |
