Summary This drawing depicts an undertaker during the Bubonic (Black)ℓPlague in the 14th century. Unsure of how the disease spread, many doctors took to wearing an elongated mask and covering all other parts of their body, thinking that if the disease passed through the air, they might abstain from contracting it. It is now known that the disease in fact transmitted by the bites of an infected flea andℓalsoℓspread through the air, thus the covering of the mouth was not always sufficient to protect the wearer from contracting the plague.ℓ
