Summary "Hekate is perhaps the most infamous deity of the classical Greek and Roman world, and yet she is one of the most poorly documented and studied. For over a century, scholars have summarised her as a fearful goddess of malevolent magical practices and ghosts, for this is what many works of classical and later literature seem to present. However, evidence exists throughout antiquity which contradicts this picture by revealing beneficial functions and public acceptance of her worship. This discrepancy has rarely been acknowledged, let alone addressed. The origins and early forms of Hekate's worship in particular have been obscured by the over-reliance on simplistic interpretations of the later literary evidence. 'Hekate in Ancient Greek Religion' is a thorough study, the first ever which focuses exclusively upon all the evidence concerning the early worship of Hekate in the Greek world, from circa 800 to 400 B.C.E. It is based upon the author's M.A. thesis on the same subject. The results are a refreshingly new picture of Hekate and her worship" --- from publisher description.
