Summary In the spring of 1917, Maria Bochkareva, a peasant woman who had been serving with the Russian army since the beginning of the war, successfully petitioned the army to allow her to take a battalion of female soldiers under her command to the front. Other battalions were also established, although the motive was largely to shock weary men into continuing with the fight. This image shows Bochkareva and her unit, along with Mrs. Emmaline Pankhurst, a British suffragette who traveled to Russia to bolster their floundering war effort.
