520 The author of this volume examines a number of ancient
maps to discern why the New World had never been found
before it had been by Christopher Columbus. Interestingly,
in spite of mounting facts that seemed to indicate that
Columbus had discovered lands previously unknown, he
continued to believe that Japan, China and the court of
the Great Khan were very close to the lands he had
discovered, as he was initially bound for Asia. He
believed that he had found Asia from a western route until
       the day he died.
