Summary Reflections On Media Ethics is a 25 minute documentary addressing the topic of morals, ethics and values, with an emphasis on the media industry. While the topic of "ethics" dates back to the days of Aristotle, "media ethics" and issues such as: representation of underserved and vulnerable populations, privacy, and censorship, the observer vs. the observed, stereotypes, public interest, manipulation, and truth are of great relevance at this time. Through in-depth interviews and discussions with leading thinkers, scholars and documentarians of our time, Reflections On Media Ethics examines many of these important issues. Interviews and discussions with Professor Noam Chomsky, at M.I.T., Baroness Mary Warnock, Amy Goodman, and renowned documentary pioneers Albert Maysles, George Stoney and Jon Alpert illuminate important considerations for the film and television industry, academic curriculum development, and the general viewing public. These conversations highlight the conflict between moral absolutism and moral relativism as it applies to topic selection, and issues of representation. Moral absolutism is the belief that there are absolute standards against which moral behaviors can be judged, and that certain actions are right or wrong, devoid of the context of the act. Modern "human rights theory" subscribes to this view. Absolutism is often philosophically contrasted with moral relativism, which is a belief that moral truths are relative to social, cultural, or historical references, and to the situation or context of the act. The creation of media and media usage may be subject to pressures to maximize: economic profits, entertainment value, information provision, the upholding of democratic freedoms, the development of art and culture, fame and vanity. How do producers, directors and journalists reconcile these, at times, conflicting goals? In addition to discussions with leading scholars and thinkers of our time, Reflections On Media Ethics will provide viewers with a balanced understanding of the issues faced by those in the media industry trying to cope with on-going economic pressures. Reflections On Media Ethics is a timely and important documentary exploring the values of right and wrong, good and evil and responsibility as it pertains to the creation of media and the media industry. This topic needs to be addressed in this day and age of global crisis, misunderstanding, religious fundamentalism, and issues of development. Can we move towards setting up a global system of ethics and ethical standards? How can we begin to set up a global code of ethics taking into account post colonial power relationships?ยก
