| Summary |
Published in 1917, Summerℓdepicts the sexual awakening of Charity Royall, a young mountain woman who was brought to town and adopted by Lawyer Royall as a child. When Charity is seventeen, Lawyer's wife dies, and he drunkenly tries to force himself into Charity's bedroom. He then tries to pressure Charity to marry him. However, Charity begins an affair with Lucious Harney, an educated young gentleman from the city. He promises to marry her, but this is complicated by the fact he is already engaged to socialiteℓAnnabel Balch. Soon after seeing them in townℓtogether, Charity discovers she is pregnant. Dealing with feminist issues considered taboo at the time, such as women's sexual desire, sexual abuse, unwanted pregnancy and abortion, Summerℓrelates the struggle of a young woman trying to understand herself and her world but constrained by the social norms of the early 20th century. |
