Throughout the story, virtuous characters are contrasted with their opposing counterparts so that a specific moral doctrine develops. The story takes place in the countryside of England, where the village is preparing to celebrate May Day. The story’s protagonist is Susan Price, whose character is constantly contrasted with the antagonistic Barbara Case throughout the story. Susan represents the ideal farm girl: spirited, hardworking, humble and caring. Barbara, meanwhile, takes on characteristics opposite of Susan’s character. She is selfish, manipulative and dishonest. In establishing these two contrasting characters, Edgeworth sets up a dichotomy that her young readers must consider. Ultimately, Susan’s virtues triumph over Barbara’s villainous antics, and a moral theme is established.
