Contents The bishop.--The letter.--Easter eve.--A nightmare.--The murder.--Uprooted.--The steppe.
Summary "The Bishop" was the second-to-last short story that Chekhov ever wrote. It is about a Bishop confronting the imminence of his death and looking back over a life that was not entirely successful. Chekhov's stories are often filled with regret and contain a melancholy nostalgia. Given the Bishop's rank in the church and the afterlife promised by his faith, his regret is particularly resonant in this story. It is collected here along with six other stories, including one of his most widely read, "The Steppe."
