Summary The first Western hero to have his adventures and good deeds published in a comic was Masked Raider in a series by Timely Comics. Beginning in 1939, average guy Jim Gardley wore a black mask and saved towns and cities from violent outlaws as the Masked Raider. Together with his golden eagle, Talon, the Raider carried out justice by his own means. The first issue in the series features additional stories like “Flying Eagle” and “The Sentinel” in which friends of the Masked Raider fight greedy desperados and save boys from perilous cliffs.
