Summary John Sutter, born in Germany and raised in Switzerland, was a pioneer, entrepreneur and the founder of Sacramento. After moving around the American West, Sutter settled in the Sacramento area, establishingℓwhat he hoped would become a Agrarian Utopia, called Sutter's Fort. Sutter's employee, John Marshall, was constructing a lumber mill inℓColoma when gold was discovered there. When Marshall brought back the gold nuggets, Sutter was the one whoℓtested them with nitric acid, which confirmed the pureness of the specimens.ℓ
