Summary This illustration shows an English attack on the Norwegian port of Bergen on August 12, 1665. The attack was part of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, which was fought from March 4, 1665 until July 31, 1667 and part of a larger series of four wars fought between the English and the Dutch for control over the seas and trade routes. Although Charles II was greatly indebted to the Dutch, he was convinced by his brother, James, and Lord Arlington, that a war with the Dutch would be highly profitable and would serve to bolster the new king's popularity.
