Summary Blaikie, author of one of the most comprehensive Livingstone biographies, writes of the enormous transformation of Africa since Livingstone's explorations. The continent has been carved up by colonial powers, and, according to Blaikie, great progress has been made in "geography, natural science, commerce, the suppression of the slave trade, missionary enterprise, and social improvement." He focuses especially on the areas around the Shire River and Lake Nyassa,ℓmodern day Malawi. Blaikie is an unquestioning Livingstone champion, and his article is anℓinteresting example of an Imperialist.ℓ
