Summary This portrait shows Bayezit I, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1389–1402. When he ascended to the throne, he was known to have had his only brother strangled in order to secure his reign. He also ordered the execution of about 3,000 European captives after the Battle of Nicopolis, although it is said that after many hours of the mass executions taking place, he called it off and spared the remaining survivors, possibly disgusted by the immense bloodshed.
