Summary This painting shows Saint Dominic presiding over an auto-da-fé, which in Spanish translates to "act of faith" and was the ritual public penance of condemned heretics and apostates that took place during the Spanish Inquisition. The scene portrayed would have taken place sometime in the 13th century during the Albigensian Crusade, which was really the first such Inquisition and was targeted towards the Cathars of France, several of whom are portrayed as the victims in this painting. Whether Saint Dominic participated in or was part of the Inquisition is still a matter of debate.
