Summary "Many are the questions about psychotherapy. What is it? How does it work? What are the best kinds? Who is qualified to perform it? Why? Why? Many writers have offered answers to these and related questions, but the answers are not always the same. Controversy rages in many quarters, controversies with implications that are scientific, practical, legal. The present paper offers a much needed clarification which should go a long way toward reducing the conflicts in this field. Here is a step-by-step description of what psychotherapy involves. The concepts are identified one at a time, in order, and clarified. This is not a partisan statement; in itself it is not controversial. It addresses itself to the task of helping to eliminate, or at least to reduce, the semantic problems that have contributed to the obfuscation of the field to the detriment of all. Where other writers have plunged into complex topics, Dr. Bernstein proceeds cautiously. Each concept is identified, defined, illustrated. Even the "obvious" ideas and terms are elaborated. By avoiding gaps in the development of the theme, by establishing the nature of pathology and therapy in general, the author provides a context in which psychotherapy can be readily understood and appreciated"--Preface.
