Summary |
This is a recollection written by Mariam Tenger of her conversations with Countess Theresa Brunswick, who at one time was thought to be the recipient of a mysteriously unaddressedℓletter by Beethoven. Known as theℓImmortal Beloved letter, the piece of correspondence was found in Beethoven's room after his death, and since then it has spawned nearly a dozen different theories about whom Beethoven was writing to. In her preface, Tenger refers to Alexander Thayer's famous biography of Beethoven, in which he also alleges that Theresa Brunswick alone could have been Beethoven'sℓImmortal Beloved. However, in more than a century of debateℓsince the publication of Tenger's memoir, Theresa Brunswick has been discounted in favor of other moreℓlikely candidates, including her sister, Josephine Brunswick. |
