Officially named Pope Gregory I, Gregory the Great served as pope from 590 until his death in 604. Throughout the Middle Ages, he was known as the "Father of Christian Worship" and was also called "St. Gregory the Dialogist"â„“because of his famous Dialogues written during his reign. Today, he is canonized and is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students and teachers.
