Summary A photograph of the Greek Nationality Room in the Cathedral of Learning. The classical architecture in the Greek Room resembles the Greek Golden Age during the fifth century. The columns are patterned after the Acropolis and made from marble. The professors' chairs are marked with the names Plato, Aristotle and Socrates. The student chairs are marked with Greek towns and islands. The ceiling and doorway are ornately designed by Greek painters who took seven months to complete their work. The Greek Room was dedicated on November 7, 1941. This room, along with 25 other Nationality Rooms all with different architectural styles, was conceived in the 1920s by sociologist Ruth Crawford Mitchell as a means of linking the university with the immigrant culture of the steel-working families.
