Summary A photograph of the front of French Nationality Room in the Cathedral of Learning. This classroom, room 149, was designed by Jacques Carlu of Paris. It depicts the 19th-century Empire Period in French history. It features the influence of the Napoleonic campaigns in Italy, Greece and Egypt in its elegant décor. This location was especially chosen for the French room because it looks out on Heinz Chapel, which is a fine example of French Gothic architecture, inspired by La Petite Sainte Chappelle in Paris. The quote on the blackboard is from Victor Hugo and reads, "C'est l'ange de jour ℓ L'espoir, l'amour Du coeur qui pense; Du monde enchante, C'est la clarte. Son nom est France ou Verite. C'est l'ange de Dieu. Dans le ciel bleu Son aile immense Couvre avec fierte L'humanite. Son nom est France ou Liberte!" This room was dedicated January 23, 1943.
