Summary A photograph of the Norwegian Nationality Room in the Cathedral of Learning. The Norwegian Nationality Room is built to resemble a cottage and comes complete with a grandfather clock and a fireplace. ℓThe professor's chair is carved with dragons' and beasts' ℓheads to ward off evil, while a tapestry in the back of the room depicts a biblical parable of the five wise and five foolish virgins. ℓThe Norwegian Room was dedicated on May 15, 1948. This room, along with 25 other Nationality Rooms all with different architectural styles, was conceived in the 1920s by sociologist Ruth Crawford Mitchell as a means of linking the university with the immigrant culture of the steel-working families.
