Summary On February 28, 1787, at the request of legislator Hugh Henry Brackenridge, the Pennsylvania State Assembly issued a charter founding the Pittsburgh Academy. With humble beginnings in a log cabin, the Academy became the primary source of formal education in the rapidly growing frontier town. Pittsburgh soon required a school to provide a more advanced education; on February 18, 1819, the Pittsburgh Academy was re-chartered as the Western University of Pennsylvania (WUP). After a series of fires destroyed the University’s buildings in downtown Pittsburgh, WUP relocated to Allegheny City in 1882. In 1908, WUP changed its name to the University of Pittsburgh and began to build its current campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, where it still thrives. Pitt today is a world-renowned institution of learning, breaking ground in academic research from ancient history to modern medicine. This Anthology features archival documents and publications illustrating the history and contributions of the University of Pittsburgh throughout its more-than-225 year existence. Included are items relating to general university history, notable visitors, sports icons, recognizable buildings, the famous Nationality Rooms, and much more.
