Summary This volume contains the proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Geosynthetics (12 ICG), held in Roma, Italy, 17-21 September 2023. About 750 Authors - Academics, Researchers, Students, Practitioners, Contractors and Manufacturers and#x2013; contributed to the peer-reviewed papers of this volume, which includes the Giroud lecture, the Bathurst lecture, the Rowe lecture, four keynote lectures and 296 technical papers. The content of these proceedings illustrates the sustainable use of geosynthetics in a variety of innovative as well as consolidated applications. After the sustainability implications in the correct use of geosynthetics, the ability to overcome the natural events effects, often related to the climate change, and to adequately afford the human activities (as the increase of pollution) forced to refer to a new keyword: Resiliency. The 12 ICG intends to become the base for the next step, hence the conference theme is 'Geosynthetics, Leading the Way to a Resilient Planet'. The conference topics, through general and parallel sessions, invited presentations and keynote lectures, address the most recent developments in geosynthetic engineering, and stimulate fruitful technical and scientific interaction among academicians, professionals, manufacturers, students. The 12 ICG proceedings contain a wealth of information that could be useful for researchers, practitioners and all those working in the broad, innovative and dynamic field of geosynthetics.
Biography Giovanni Biondi is associate professor at the University of Messina where he is also head of the laboratory of soil mechanics and referent for the shaking table with laminar box equipment. His scientific interests concern with the seismic performance of natural slopes, concrete and earth-reinforced retaining structures, earth dams and foundations. The research activity led to more than 150 publications on peer reviewed journals and proceedings of Italian and international conferences. He has been member of the Council of the Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI,2015-2019) and member of the Council of the Italian Geotechnical Group (GNIG,2015-2018). He is currently member of the editorial board of three international journals, of the Council of the GNIG (since 2021), of the Italian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS,since 2019) and he is Italian Corresponding Member of the TC218 "Reinforced Fill Structures" of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He has been scientific director of several research projects, invited lecturer at national and international conferences and member of Scientific and Organization Committees of several conferences among which IARG 2008 (Catania), VI (Bologna, 2016) and VIII (Palermo, 2023) CN-RIG, IIPDB (Taormina, 2012), 7ICEGE (Rome, 2019), CPT22 (Bologna, 2022) and 12 ICG (Rome, 2023). Daniele Cazzuffi is leader of the "Geosynthetics and Environmental Geotechnics" group at CESI SpA. After a degree in Civil Engineering (Politecnico di Milano, 1979) and a Master in Geotechnical Engineering (University of Padova, 1981), he has been involved in research and design programs, regarding the use of geotextiles, geomembranes, related products and associated technologies in many practical applications in Italy and abroad, particularly in the field of geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. In 1989-1990 he spent a sabbatical year in important academic and engineering institutions in United States and Canada and then he has been Visiting Professor in Geotechnics at Florence and Calabria Universities and lately (1994-2002) at Trento University. He is author or co-author of more than 250 papers and an active member of many different national and international technical committees. He has been President of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS, 2002- 2006) and today he is President of CEN (European Committee on Standardization) TC 189 on Geosynthetics and President of the Italian Chapter of IGS. He is also member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI). He was appointed as keynote lecturer at the 9th ICG (2010, Guaruja, Brasil), and he received the "Paolo Scolari 2011" Award at UNI in Milano in April 2011. He received the IGS Award at EuroGeo 2 (Bologna, 2000) and also the IGS Honorary Membership at the 10th ICG (Berlin, 2014). He had the honour to be the first LMNS Lecturer on the subject Evolution in design of geotextile filters in occasion of EuroGeo 6 organised by the IGS Turkish Chapter (Ljubljana, September 2016). Nicola Moraci is full Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, where he was Vice Rector for Research, and is currently Head of the Department of Civil, Energy, Environmental and Materials Engineering, Member of the Academic Senate and Board of Administrators, Coordinator of the Research Doctorate in Geotechnical Engineering. He was President of the Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI) and member of numerous TC for IGS, ISSMGE, CEN and AGI. Actually, he is Vice-President of the Italian Chapter of IGS. His research activity developed along multiple themes including slope stability, landslide risk mitigation, use of geosynthetics in defence of territory and environmental protection works, landfills and remediation of contaminated sites, soil reinforcement with geosynthetics, protective filters, sustainable geotechnical works. The research activity has led to more than 220 papers, mostly published in journals and conference proceedings, for which he received the IGS Award 2008 and the Geotextile and Geomembranes Best Paper 2017. He is currently Associate Editor Geotextile and Geomembranes and Member of the Editorial Board of Geosynthetic International and other important journals. He has been scientific director of numerous research projects, invited lecturer at several Conferences and member of Scientific and Organization Committees of numerous Conferences. Claudio Soccodato is the General Secretary of the Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI) since 1997 and in 2014 has been honored as emeritus member. He is Treasurer of the Italian Chapter of IGS since 1999. He is editor of several Guidelines, Suggested Methods and Conference Proceedings. In the professional field, as mining engineer, he has been responsible for lots of projects related to natural disaster management, tunnelling, oil and gas, mining, landfills, dams, infrastructures and landslides in more than 10 countries worldwide and 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. He was Technical Director until the end of 90s at an Italian leading foundation company and, at present, he is CEO at IAT Ingegneria per l'Ambiente ed il Territorio Srl geotechnical consulting firm. Since 2004 he is also General Secretary of Alta Scuola, an Italian Research Center on Historical City in unstable territory. He has been involved in dozens of conferences as chair, convener and lecturer, being member of many technical and scientific committees. He has organized and co-organized hundreds of national and international geotechnical conferences and courses. He has participated and/or coordinated many international working meetings related to natural hazards with foreign academic, private and government delegates.
