"This book is written for those stutterers, beginners and oldtimers, to whom care has not been available, for their relatives and friends and, to some extent, for parents of potential stutterers. School teachers in rural areas and those who are members of school systems too small to afford a speech pathologist, visiting nurses, social workers and all other professional people whose business is human welfare may find material in these pages which will enable them to give counsel and some aid to many thousands of stutterers who would otherwise receive no understanding and no help. This book might also be thought of as a first aid manual for stutterers and, as such, it is hoped that it will find a place on every physician's reference shelf. By explaining here the nature of this disorder, its cause and treatment, it is believed that parents of children who are in the primary stages of stuttering can become sufficiently well informed from these pages to enable them to establish a speech-healthy environment for their youngsters and so prevent the further development of unnecessary troubles"--Introduction.
