Summary |
In September 1982, 45 nations of the Commonwealth sent 1500 athletes to the Australian city of Brisbane. The occasion was the 12th Commonwealth Games. The story focuses on athletes and coaches, highlighting their relationships, lifestyles and training and their individual struggles for gold in Brisbane. The unfolding drama has been filmed as far afield as the luxurious surrounds of Toronto's York University, and the starkness of the Kenyan countryside. At times it records the sometimes startling contrasts in cultures and outlooks of competitors who would soon share the urge to excel and the determination to bring glory to their native lands. With the largest film crew ever assembled by Film Australia, and drawing on a dozen other film sources, here is a film that succeeds in involving the viewer in an intense, personal study of nine world class competitors. The result demonstrates what the total, colourful, striving scene is really all about. Between the pageantry of the opening and closing ceremonies, we see their victories and their defeats and we come to see that All That Glitters is very much more than the medals. |
